Happy Birthday, Marian McPartland!

From Tony Bennett:
"For Marian - Not only is she a great friend, but a person whose Master Class on NPR's station distributes and explores the culture of Jazz and real music."

From Renée Fleming:
"Marian's first public performance of Grieg's Piano Concerto in A minor at my alma mater, the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam, when I was a young undergraduate was a complete inspiration. When most would be resting comfortably on their accomplishments, Marian took up a new challenge...to learn to read music! She embodies the endurance, utter grace, and quiet passion we musicians strive for."

From Burt Bacharach:
"To an amazing lady with love and appreciation."

From Dave Brubeck:
"Almost 50 years ago I was asked by a jazz journalist to name my favorite jazz pianists. Among the top three that came to mind was Marian McPartland. She has remained one of the greatest throughout her incredibly long career. In fact, I wrote a tune based on the syllables of her names and dedicated to her. Marian and I played it together on her show. Now I often play "Marian McPartland" in concert with my quartet. When I announce it is dedicated to Marian, the audience always responds with applause, because she is held in such high respect by all jazz fans."

From Linda Ronstadt:
"I just love Marian and Piano Jazz, so I was thrilled and honored to be on the show. It was a little over my head musically, but never mind, she was extremely gracious.

Something funny happened when I was on. I have a problem with giggling when I get nervous. Once it starts it has a mind of its own and I can't control it. We were talking and something silly set me off, and I started to laugh and then it turned into giggling that I couldn't stop. But she was so great. She kind of went with me. It's the only thing you can do. It's like being in a current in the ocean. I instantly knew what she was made of. She could've let me hang myself out to dry in that instant. That's when you know the true graciousness of a fellow performer on stage with you. I decided right then that this is a thoroughly decent human being. I really have great respect for her. Not only her musicianship, but her humanity."
