Training & Exercise

Thursday, October 04, 2007

As folks grow older, they tend to become progressively less steady on their feet and more prone to lose their balance and fall. I am sure that falls rank high on the list of things that lead to premature death on the part of the elderly.

In addition to a variety of very effective balancing exercises, all fitness centers have various devices to help correct this problem. It's very difficult to maintain your balance when standing on one of these devices, but your balance will improve dramatically if you persist and practice with regularity.

Although my balance is quite good now at age 93 and I am very sure-footed, I still include these exercises in my training routine as precautionary and preventative measures. Aside from its importance to my running career, I believe balancing exercises would extend most elderly people's mobility by a significant number of years. In my opinion, everyone age 70 and up should include balancing in their exercise routine before it becomes a problem. End of Blog No. 8
