Training & Exercise

Thursday, October 04, 2007

As folks grow older, they tend to become progressively less steady on their feet and more prone to lose their balance and fall. I am sure that falls rank high on the list of things that lead to premature death on the part of the elderly.

In addition to a variety of very effective balancing exercises, all fitness centers have various devices to help correct this problem. It's very difficult to maintain your balance when standing on one of these devices, but your balance will improve dramatically if you persist and practice with regularity.

Although my balance is quite good now at age 93 and I am very sure-footed, I still include these exercises in my training routine as precautionary and preventative measures. Aside from its importance to my running career, I believe balancing exercises would extend most elderly people's mobility by a significant number of years. In my opinion, everyone age 70 and up should include balancing in their exercise routine before it becomes a problem. End of Blog No. 8

Power Plate Vibration Training: Stability / Balance / & More

Dear Jim,
I just learned about you while reading an article in the December issue of Discover Magazine titled "Can We Cure Aging? It talks about your experience as an elder athlete. The article also links the reduction of inflammation as being an important factor in longevity.

I decided to look up your blog and found this article that you have regarding balance and stability.
I am a personal trainer at Equinox Fitness in Soho, New York City.
I have had success in increasing clients coordination stability and balance while training on a machine called the Power Plate. It uses Vibration to stimulate muscle into contraction and by accelerating that muscular contraction controls the amount of force output. ie: Newtons Second Law (Force = Mass X Acceleration).
Using the Power Plate has many benefits: It increases the amount of regenerative and repair hormones, improves blood circulation, strengthens bone tissue, improves lymph drainage and increases basal metabolic rate. All this results in more strength, more speed, more stamina, rapid recovery of muscles and tissue, increased flexibility, mobility and coordination, improved collagen production, and fat reduction.
If you are ever in New York City I invite you to be my guest and join me in a complementary session.
Your commitment to health and fitness is an inspiration. It would be a joy and a delight to correspond with you. I wish you continued success.
All the best, John
