Meet My Daughter-in-Law, Lynne Graves Hammond
Tuesday, October 30, 2007
Since I'm a happy 93-year-old guy in perfect health, I probably should be dispensing suggestions or ideas for healthy aging but I'm not in this blog—or maybe I am if being loved and pampered by a daughter-in-law like mine has a positive effect on the health of an old fellow like me. I believe that it does, and if true, it might suggest that a father should (selfishly) be proactive in the choice of the right bride for his son.
In Lynne's case, no action on my part was needed as her husband, my son Mac, inherited his father's good judgment with respect to choosing the right bride.
Lynne is a beautiful, unique, interesting and multitalented person who can charm a bird right out of its tree. She's an ordained minister, a charismatic speaker, an author who has written a number of books on her favorite subject (prayer and the power of prayer), and in my view, there are few cooks on this planet whose culinary talents can match hers.
Prayer is the main focus of her ministry and she is sought after as a speaker by large churches, prayer conferences and other large Christian groups around the world and there's no time for cooking except for family gatherings on holidays and Sunday dinner when she's in town.
It is her talent as a really great cook that this Blog is all about. She had no cooking experience prior to marriage and comparatively little time to devote to it since then due to the time constraints imposed by her very busy schedule and heavy involvement in other areas. It is this that makes her superior talent as a really great cook such an enigma.
I think it almost has to be an inbred sort of thing as is the case with many southern ladies. She cooks by ear and never follows any recipe closely. She has a special knack for seasoning food. She uses the taste test as she cooks and adds a pinch of this and a dash of that until it tastes "just right."
Now for the good part. Almost every Saturday morning when she's in town, she calls me before she goes grocery shopping and asks me what I'd like for Sunday dinner. My answer is always the same—"Lynne, I've never eaten anything you cooked that didn't taste absolutely great," which is the literal truth. She and I both love all vegetables and she can cook them to perfection. I always go home looking and feeling like a stuffed toad but happy as a lark. I wish all old dudes like me could be blessed with a daughter-in-law like Lynne. End of Blog.
