A Spicy Solution—Maybe

If you're a fan of Indian curry, your brain may thank you for it. Early research shows that a spice in yellow curry may help clear beta-amyloid, a protein fragment which causes brain plaques. That spice is tumeric, which contains the compound curcumin. Our advisor, Fred Vagnini, M.D., medical director of the Heart, Diabetes and Weight Loss Centers of New York, tells patients to take curcumin to reduce inflammation. Since inflammation in the brain may be associated with Alzheimer's, this could explain the research results.

Statin Might Help Dementia

You may have heard that statins, a class of drugs that lower cholesterol, may help people with dementia. Unfortunately, studies have produced conflicting results-until now. A recent analysis by researchers at the Boston University School of Medicine shows promise that a specific statin drug called Zocor (simvastatin) could greatly lower the rate of dementia in people 65 and older. The Alzheimer's Association cautions that more research needs to be done, but if you take a statin other than Zocor you may want to ask your doctor if you can switch.
