In India, adults who mistreat or neglect their aging parents could go to prison for up to three months. The new law aims to stop the growing problem of elder abuse; in a youthful country where 70 percent of the population is under age 35, older people, once greatly respected, are now often seen as a burden.
This legislation applies to any adult with a parent over age 60, and there is no room for appeal.
